How do you rate a speaker? Is it based on how good his speech was delivered, how he connected with the audience or how clear his message was addressed? Well not just one of these can be the criteria of rating how good the speaker is but all of it. Being a good speaker not only means that you have delivered a speech well, without stuttering, faltering or having long pauses. This is because a when you give a good speech, you are called a good public speaker but when you deliver a moving speech you are called a motivational or keynote speaker.
The advent of technology brought about power point presentations which are sometimes greatly abused in usage by speakers who use them when delivering a speech. Their reason is to have a visual aid, to add emphasis and entertainment to their speech and the message they want to convey. However, the main purpose of delivering the speech from a personal point of view is diminished because instead of relying on its power, the speaker relies on the “visual aid”.
Most professional and seasoned motivational speakers believe that a message conveyed in a speech that comes from the heart and not the head is a well received one. This is because the audience feels the presence of the speaker when he or she is delivering the speech. It greatly affects a speaker’s presentation when he is nervous, unorganized and not prepared.
Let’s take for example a basic presentation done by an employee in front of bosses, team members and colleagues. The goal for this presentation or speech is to convince them why a project needs this kind of attention and resources like budget, manpower and time. If you have studied well, you will know the topic through your mind and eventually by heart because putting effort into something means you want it to be successful. Practicing is also key to success, the more you practice, the more familiar you will be with the topic like keynote speakers who are experts in their field.
Visual aids are definitely not a hindrance in terms of giving a presentation or speech but it does become that once you only rely on it and not study your topic. Once you deliver your presentation, your audience will not only listen to how you speak but will also observe your body language. Confidence shows through as well as fear and uncertainty. How will you expect someone to believe in what you are saying when you don’t even know the topic very well?
